5 signs your baby is ready for diaper pants

Every baby is unique, and every diaper journey is different. While some little ones are ready to move to real underwear by the time they are two-years-old, others take a few years longer.

Some parents choose to keep their babies in taped diapers until they switch to underwear, but many opt to put more active or older babies in diaper pants.

Instead of taped sides, diaper pants feature a stretchy, all-round 360 waistband so they can be pulled up and down like big kid undies, with the advantage of tear-off sides for quick and nifty changes. Diaper pants have a snug fit, so some parents feel they are also more secure and less likely to leak than taped diapers.

Your baby may be showing hints that they are ready to change to diaper pants already. Check out these signs:

1: They don’t want to lie down for changes

You’ve been changing them since birth – and had got to the point where you could do it with your eyes shut. Now, all of a sudden, you find yourself needing octopus arms as you wrestle a rocking, rolling and wriggling tot who can easily run or crawl away from you. Diaper pants make it easier to do stand-up diaper changes and can be quickly pulled up and torn off.

2: They tell you when they’ve done a pee or poop

Your tot might be starting to be aware that they have done a pee or a poop and they tell you about it. This means they may be almost ready for potty training and diaper pants can help them practice the skills they need to pull up and down their own underwear.

3. They can dress themselves

This means they’ll probably have the skills to pull up (and down) diaper pants too. Diaper pants could be their first step towards big kid underwear.

4: They prefer to do it all by themselves

They want to wear the pants! Some toddlers want to be fiercely independent and pulling up and down their own pants will make them feel proud, alleviating some of that frustration.

5: They are potty training

Diaper pants are a great potty training aid. Even if your baby is in underwear in the daytime, it can take them a lot longer to master keeping dry during the night. Rather than put a diaper at night (which may feel like a step backwards) diaper pants look and feel more like underwear so will ensure they still feel confident that they’re making progress with potty training and big enough to be out of ‘baby’ diapers.
